Set in the sixties and early seventies, Sacred Objects follows Laura McKenna, a young woman, as she struggles with her own morality against the cultural upheaval of the times. As a young girl, Laura escapes into a fantasy world to avoid her angry father and troubled mother. In high school, she falls for a preacher's son, but when he rejects her sexual invitation, Laura stumbles and withdraws.
Away at college, Laura meets Pia, an exotic young widow, an artist, who lives in a magical house near the Ohio River. This relationship reshapes Laura's values in ways that both challenge and excite her.
After Laura's first boyfriend ends their relationship, she experiments with other men, only to find more heartache. However, it is on a lone pilgrimage that Laura discovers the sacred objects she's collected along the way. To move ahead, she is forced to choose which ones to keep, and which to let go.

Bought this book for my wife at her request. I offer her review here: This may be Avery Kerr's first published book, but it is obvious that she is a seasoned writer. I only FINISH books with great character development, interesting plots, great descriptions and no grammatical errors. Finish this one, I did! Kerr's book will be especially cherished by those who reached adulthood in the seventies and eighties. Her keen observations of the pressures of the times and the choices to be made were spot on. I hope I can find future books by this writer, as I will most certainly buy them all.

Sacred Objects Avery Kerr 9781533308047 Books Reviews

Highly evocative of time and place, Avery Kerr's, Sacred Objects, explores a young woman's journey of discovery. Leaving her southern roots and perspectives behind to attend university in the north, Laura concentrates on her studies rather than form friendships. But one day, while on a winter's walk, her world is changed when she meets Pia, a mystical artist. An enchanting read.
I was fascinated by all the characters and enjoyed journeying with Laura as she experiences tremendous growth. But I was especially interested in Pia and how her Hawaiian background/traditions fed her life and Laura's. I hope we'll get to meet these two women again in a future book.
Avery Kerr's words flow and propel the action - I kept wanting to know what Laura would do next!
It has been a long time since a book compelled me to turn each page! I loved the story of Laura & the people who so intimately influenced her journey. I found myself thinking of these people long after I closed the book and wondering how their lives had changed. Sacred Objects reflects many of our own youthful experiences and reminds us of how those decisions shaped our life's path. Sacred Objects is a very personal & emotional story. I anxiously look forward to reading more work by Ms Kerr soon!
Not the usual "coming of age" story, as Laura escapes her fragile mom and alcoholic father to attend university. A successful student, she distinguishes herself among peers and instructors. Her five year journey to a Masters Degree, describes her relationship with an older, wiser friend, the mystical Pia, a famous professor who trusts Laura as right hand and editor, and an immature fraternity man, her first lover.

I use a yellow marker to underline the delicious prose and sophisticated wit. Loved this book and look forward to more from Avery Kerr, a most sensitive writer.
Written mostly in dialogue, this story is brisk and satisfying. If you don’t like fiction about relationships, this book isn’t for you. However, if you enjoy insightful descriptions of personal connections, you’ll find this book a compelling foray into the entanglements of Laura with her family, friends, and lovers. Kerr’s portrayal of Laura’s growth through her relationship with her worldly and big-hearted mentor, Pia, is believable and moving. Great summer read!
We can’t predict who our spiritual teachers will be. Our job is to be heartfully open and the teacher will reveal herself. In this lovely novel of self discovery we are invited in to Laura’s inner world as she defines herself through struggle with old and new relationships some confining, some opening to new and challenging depths. Pia, her wise woman friend does not come with the usual “guru” label but is a complex, smart and joyful guide for life. I liked the way Laura is presented with an awareness that she is a bit surprised to find within herself. She makes a brave entrance into new experiences while seeking the inner wisdom that will free her to live fully. Laura is a very sympathetic young woman on the brink of fulfillment.
Since Kerr's novel is so multi-faceted it's hard to know where to start. One of the themes that spoke to me with such a strong sense of familiarity is the idea of friends as teachers, teachers as friends, and the powerful gifts we share by seeking such bonds. In her story, Ms. Kerr covers a brief period of time, mostly Laura's college experience. And yet it is a pivotal time, a fragile time, a time when the protagonist transitions from childhood to adulthood.

This strong theme coupled with an examination of Hawaiian mythology, meditates on how objects (including ourselves and the objects of our desires) become internalized, part of who we are; but only through trial, error, introspection and the guidance of others.

"Sacred Objects" is a very enjoyable read, one that educates as well as stirs the feelings and memories of those who eventually found their adult selves.
